Sculptural Headwear

Explore the meaning and uses of headwear, historically and currently, while designing and creating a personal, wearable head-based sculpture. Class will include learning embroidery, millinery tricks and materials, weaving, mixed media, sculptural armatures and more. Jodi will share contemporary art and artists whose work will inspire and inform the student projects. I will thoughtfully guide each student toward making a unique statement in their sculpture. Though much work will be completed in class, some may need to finish their piece at home. All levels welcome.

Museum Inspiration Workshop

Learn how I approach making Wallflower, a sculpture on view at Danforth Art Museum. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to study with exhibiting artist Jodi Colella as she shares her construction techniques and process for creating the work Wallflower, now on view at the Danforth Art Museum. Participants will create the form and reinforce the foundation, create petals from assorted materials and assemble onto the form. Next, students will line the center with fabric before adding beads and other items to simulate sunflower seeds. Enjoy learning additional suggestions and techniques to personalize the sculptures. The instructor will provide most materials however students are encouraged to bring fabrics, threads, buttons, beads and other decorative items. Jodi’s artwork includes crochet; participants may add crochet if they already have this skill; please bring a 2mm crochet hook. Otherwise, no experience is necessary. This Program is on hold until further notice. Recognizing a need for a new form of learning and community, in 2015 I founded FiberLab, a place to expand knowledge, skills and, most importantly, creativity. Its members experiment with material and process while developing strong personal connections within a supportive community. The group started calling it FiberLab after a few sessions because of its shared, inquisitively open and experimental approach. There are no wrong answers in the “Lab” because all efforts, even those that end unexpectedly, are successful in advancing knowledge and enhancing discovery.
